TechforID – Engineers from Northwestern University have successfully developed the world’s smallest robot crab that can be controlled remotely.
This half-millimeter robot would be able to bend, twist, crawl, walk, turn around and even jump.
Besides crabs, researchers have also developed robots that resemble worms, crickets and beetles of almost the same size.
Although the research is exploratory at this stage, the researchers believe their technology could bring the field closer to realizing micro-sized robots capable of performing practical tasks in tightly enclosed spaces.
This does not even exclude the possibility of using it for medical purposes to study the anatomy of the living human body in more detail.
Research on the smallest crab robot will be published Wednesday, May 25, in the journal Science Robotics.

Smaller than fleas, crabs are not powered by complex hydraulic or electrical equipment. Rather, its strength lies in the elastic resilience of its body.

To build the world’s smallest robot, researchers used a shape-memory alloy material that transforms into a “memorized” shape when heated.
In this case, the researchers used a scanned laser beam to quickly heat the robot at various target locations on its body.
The thin layer of glass elastically restores the corresponding part of the structure to its distorted shape once cooled.
When the robot moves from one phase to another, it changes shape to a memorized shape and vice versa.
Additionally, the world’s smallest/super mini robot can also be controlled based on the direction of the laser scanning directed by the researchers.
